“It’s a plus sign,” Sara said with shock written all over her face. I had just arrived home with a pregnancy test and my wife was going to ease our minds by taking it. It would be negative and we would be able to move on from our “little” scare.
I grabbed the directions, knowing her look wasn’t one of relief but one of shock. My mind was racing as I read the instructions. “This can’t be! A plus sign means you’re pregnant!” I exclaimed as shock started to envelope me. Pregnant?! This is impossible. Sara is 42, almost 43! That’s too old to get pregnant. These are the thoughts that rushed through my mind in that moment. Then my plans, my future, our future flooded through my mind. We were just ten short years from being empty nesters. We had made plans! After considering moving to a larger home, we had recently decided we would stay in our current townhome for another five years. Even though it was small, it worked, was paid off, and we believed the Lord was guiding us to stay. We were surely going to have to move now! Our home was not large enough for six people!
Then it hit me. Wave after wave of God’s reassuring promise that He is in control came over me. Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” One of my favorite verses struck me in the moments of fear. Isaiah 41:10, “Fear not, I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
In these moments and days after finding out that our life was going to be drastically changed by a baby, God showed us that although we may have plans, it is He whose plans will come to fruition. No fear, fretting, or wishing will change them! This is what He wanted for us. This is what He saw we needed and this was His plan! His promise that “all things work together for good, for those who love God and are called according to His purposes” (Romans 8:28) is what we can stand firm on. We can know that all will be good with the plan that our Father has for us!
